Organising the photo shoot

For my photoshoot i will take a minimum of 4 photos, 1 for the front cover and 3 for the contents page.

Front cover
Setting-  In a bright area, inside.
Props- Films, cds and a book; this is becasue the magazine is all about entertainment for teenagers.
What type of shot will be used?- A mid shot so you can see what the person in the photo is doing, and you get to see all the props.

Contents page
The three pictures for the contents page will be of individual people with gadgets such as a phone, an ipod or a camera-

  • One picture will be of somebody listening to music on their ipod.

Contents page textual analysis

The background of this contents page is very simple with just a white background, however it does not make the contents page boring. The page has many images and writing and helps the page stand out to the readers. The headline appears just as simple as the rest of the contents page but the use of black makes the title stand out against the white background. The images used on the contents page are taken from films and probably featured on the front cover, they are the size they are so as the text will fit on one page. The photos that are used immediately informs the readers what the articles are going to be about.
The page numbers next to the features are much larger than the rest of the text, they stand out more to the readers so they can find the right page straight away.

Textual analysis of magazines

The front cover includes the 'hit' show 'The inbetweeners'; this will make the teenage audience it is trying to attract interested in the magazine and make them want to read on. The banner on the magazine 'The inbetweeners interview inside' stands out and grabs the reader's attention, the words are large and on a yellow background which helps it stand out even more. The only writing on the front cover that is bigger than the banner is the title of the magazine 'First car'; the larger fonts used for these two headings shows it must have some importance to the magazine, which they evidently do the title needs to stand out so that you know what the magazine is called and the banner does so you know what the magazine contains inside. The title is large and in bold on a dark background, this catches the eye of the passer by. The photograph used is a shot of the characters from 'The inbetweeners' this lets you know without even reading the titles or subtitles that there is a special inside on the show or characters. The colours used on the front colour and straplines all combine together such as yellows, blacks and whites which helps the magazine look tidy and quite expensive for a student magazine. The niche audience is for teenagers you can tell this as there is a subheading saying 'the magazine for young people' this easily shows the type of audience the magazine is trying to attract.

Initial comparison of magazines

I looked at 3 student magazines to see what each of their contents were and compared them to each other

Magazine 1
Etc (Education, training, careers)
Etc magazine contained a lot on different careers for students to look into and consider; it also contained a lot of random information that teenagers may find interesting to know its useful fun facts helps the magazine appear more interesting to the young audience it is trying to attract. The magazine also included a music section and a section on life for teenagers to be interested in and use for the future.

Magazine 2
Smaart Talent
Smaart talent magazine looks a lot into the future of teenagers; universities to consider visiting, careers to consider going into and student profiles so as the teenagers can look into what people of there own age had to say about these places and careers. This can help the student make up their own mind on whether to take the same path. It also involves a question and answer section which can help students that have the same questions to be answered. This magazine is different to the first as it is completely based around the students life and future and does not have any fun sections that the teenagers may find more interesting, but it is useful for the student worried or thinking about their career.

Magazine 3
Student ID xmas edition
This magazine is different to the other two not only with a colourful more fun looking layout but also with the contents. It contains interesting music and film reviews as well as horoscopes and a Christmas wish list to match the season of its release. Yet it also helps on the student side of things by including revision tips to help near exams. The magazine is a lot more fun than the other two whilst also including information that will be useful for the future of the students at college.
